Terror suspect on US most wanted list
may be in custody in Pakistan

March 02, 2003 04:13 IST

US authorities, working with their Pakistani counterparts, arrested three suspected Al Qaeda members in Pakistan, one of whom may be on America's most wanted list, a CNN report said on Saturday.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, it said, is suspected of being involved in the planning of several Al Qaeda attacks, including the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States.

Mohammed, who is on the US Federal Bureau of Investigation's most wanted list, was among the three people picked up in Rawalpindi, near capital Islamabad.

The US state department had offered up to $25 million for information leading to the arrest of Mohammed, who is in his late thirties and whom it suspects of coordinating finances and recruitment for Al Qaeda (The base), a global terrorist network.

In 1996, he had been indicted by a New York court for his alleged role in a plot to blow up 12 US-bound commercial planes.
