Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, Bloemfontein

- The partnership of 170 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Hashan Tillekeratne was Sri Lanka's best for the second wicket in the World Cup. The pair betters the previous best stand of 101 runs between Jayasuriya and Asanka Gurusinha against England at Faisalabad on 9-3-1996.
- The above partnership was also the best by any team for the second wicket against New Zealand in the World Cup. Previously, Indians Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar, at Dunedin on 12-3-1992, had put on 127 for this wicket.
- The second wicket partnership of 170 runs between Jayasuriya and Tillekeratne was the best at Goodyear Park, Bloemtontein, for any wicket, bettering the previous best of 165 runs between Englishmen Naseer Hussain and Nick Knight against the home side for the first wicket on 23-1-2000. The Sri Lankan pair obviously goes past the previous best of 132 runs for the second wicket at this venue, which was the 132 between Sri Lankans Jayasuriya and Gurusinha against the Kiwis on 8-12-1994.
- The Sri Lankan pair equalled its best partnership for the 2nd wicket in limited over internationals. Sidath Wettimuny and Roy Dias had also put on 170 runs for the second wicket against India at Delhi, way back on 15-9-1982. The partnership was also the best for Sri Lanka against the Kiwis for the second wicket in LOIs, just going ahead of the earlier best stand of 166 between Roshan Mahanama and Gurusinha at the Premadasa Stadium at Colombo on 13-12-1992.
- Jayasuriya (when on 7) reached 4000 runs as captain in his 106th match. He becomes the second Sri Lankan after Arjuna Ranatanga (5606 runs in 193 matches -- the most by any LOI captain) and fifth captain (others Mohammad Azharuddin, Allan Border and Hansie Cronje), in LOIs to reach this landmark.
- Jayasuriya (120) recorded his 16th hundred his career in 288th LOI match. Though he was appearing in his fourth edition of the World Cup since 1992 and in his 18th World Cup match, this was his maiden three figure score in the championships. His previous highest score was the 82 he made against England at Faisalabad on 9-3-1996.
- This was Jayasuriya's fourth hundred against the Kiwis. He equals the tally of Pakistani Saeed Anwar to become the second batsmen in LOIs to register most three-figure knocks against the Kiwis.
- Jayasuriya became the only second Sri Lankan to score a World Cup hundred after Aravinda de Silva, who has two -- 145 and 107 not out -- scored during the 1996 editon of the Cup.
- This was the highest individual score made by a Sri Lankan batsman against the Kiwis in the Wrodl Cup, surpassing the earlier record of 80 runs, held by Roshan Mahanama, at Hamilton on 25-2-1992.
- Interestingly, Jayasuriya's last five LOI innings has yielded him 453 runs (avg. 90.60). His scores being: 122 (v Aus at Sydney on 9-1-2003), 106 (v Eng at Sydney on 13-1-2003), 6 (v Aus at Brisbane, 15-1-2003), 99 (v Eng at Adelaide on 17-1-2003) and now this 120 against the Kiwis!
- Tillekeratne's unbeaten 81 was his first 15th score of 50-plus (including two hundreds) in his 189th match. Interestingly, this was his first since his 73 he made against Australia at Sydney way back in 13-1-1999. Since then Tillekeratne has appeared in 19 matches, while scoring 349 runs (avg. 26.85) with a highest of 44.
- Scott Styris (141) registered his highest score of his LOI career in 52 matches. His previous highest was the 85 he made against the West Indies at Gros Islet (St Lucia) on 8-6-2002. Earlier he also went past the previous best by a Kiwi batsman against Sri Lanka in the World Cup, which was the unbeaten 83 by Glenn Turner at Nottingham on 9-6-1979.
- Stryis's 141 was now the highest at this venue surpassing 140 by Jayasuriya also against the Kiwis on 8-12-1994.
- Styris now has the highest individual score by a Kiwi batsman against Sri Lanka. Former opener Glenn Turner had made 140 at Auckland on 20-3-1983.
- Styris's 141 runs represented 62.66% of the total runs (225) made his team. This domination is the second best by any batsman in the WC after Kapil Dev's 175 unbeaten out of a total of 266-8 against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on 18-6-1983. Kapil had made 65.79% of his team's total.
- Kumar Sangakkara's four dismssals (3cts+1st) makes him the first Sri Lankan to do so in a WC match. Previously Tillekeratne (twice in 1992) and Romesh Kaluwitharana (in 1999) have cliamed three dismissals each in a World Cup match.
- The man of the match award was Jayasuriya's 36th of his career in 288 matches. However, this was his only third in the World Cup in 18 matches.
