Pivotals slide in lacklustre trading; Nifty down seven points, 857.95

Pivotals declined in a lacklustre trading session at the National Stock Exchange today.

S&P CNX Nifty opened at 865.10, saw a high and low of 855.35, and closed at 857.95 from the previous levels of 865.10, showing a net loss of 7.15 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior closed at 1441.25, losing 18 points, S&P CNX Defty ended at 701.25, shedding 4.65 points, S&P CNX 500 ended at 587.63, losing 3.99 points and CNX Midcap 200 ended at 525.07, declining by three points.

Today, 338 scrips advanced, 632 declined and 121 were unchanged, and 19 securities hit their price bands.

The total turnover was Rs 10.38 billion from trading in Rs 55.1 million.

The topper in turnover list was ITC (Rs 1.5 billion), followed by Reliance (Rs 1.29 billion), Satyam Computers (Rs 861.9 million), SBI (Rs 688.7 million) and Telco (Rs 535.1 million). Others that recored a high turnover were Tisco, Castrol, HCL-HP, Zee Telefilms, Pentafour Software, MTNL and Tata Tea.

The top gainers were Smithkiline Beecham , Cochin Refineries, Castrol, Indian Hotels and Cipla. Prominent among those that shed value were Reliance Capital, Tata Tea, Hero Honda, Arvind Mills and MTNL.

The total value traded in the depository section of the NSE was Rs 42 million from 279,000 shares.

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 3.43 billion. The 91-day treasury bill maturing on January 23, 1999 was traded for Rs 370 million at a weighted yield of 9.38 per cent. The 12.50 per cent government loan maturing in 2007 was traded for Rs 250 million at a weighted yield of 12.21 per cent.
