Equities fluctuate in narrow range; Nifty down 1.6 points, 810.85

Equities fluctuated in a narrow range and showed a downward trend as the market sentiment remained subdued at the National Stock Exchange which remained open today in lieu of the holiday on Wednesday.

S&P CNX Nifty opened at 812.70, touched the day's high of 817.40, fell to the day's low of 804.30 before closing at 810.85, showing a net loss of 1.60 points from the previous close of 812.45.

CNX Nifty Junior ended lower by 9.25 points at 1369, S&P CNX Defty closed at 660.65, a decline of 1.30 points, while S&P CNX 500 and CNX Midcap 200 declined by 0.99 points and 0.84 points to 556.98 and 501.31 respectively.

The total turnover reported on the NSE was Rs 10.03 billion from trading in 41.6 million shares in 153,798 trades. Debentures traded were valued was Rs 3.41 million. About 395 scrips advanced, 366 declined and 106 were unchanged. And 12 securities hit their price bands today.

Satyam Computer topped the turnover list with Rs 2.30 billion followed by Pentafour Software (Rs 1.50 billion), ITC (Rs 1.07 billion), Zee Telefilms (Rs 1.01 billion) and SBI (Rs 640.6 million). Others that recorded a high turnover were Reliance, Telco, Castrol, Silverline, Tata Tea, HCL-HP, Software Solutions Integrated and Tisco.

The top gainers were IPCL, ABB, IDBI, Arvind Mills and ICICI. Prominent shares that shed value were Ranbaxy, ACC, SBI, Infosys and Tata Tea. The foreign institutional investors were net sellers to the tune of Rs 17 million, while domestic institutional investors and mutual funds bought shares of a net amount of Rs 4 million.

Meanwhile, the wholesale debt market of NSE recorded a trades of Rs 1.2 billion.
