NTPC proposes power project in BangladeshThe National Thermal Power Corporation plans to establish a 1000 mw gas-based combined cycle power project in Bangladesh. A proposal has been put forth to the neighbour as gas is available there cheaply, NTPC chairman Rajender Singh told newspersons in New Delhi. The project would be a joint venture, involving the Bangladesh Power Development Promotion Board and Gas Company. Singh said power from the project would be brought in through the Malda route. ''Bangladesh has heard us patiently and their response is awaited,'' Singh said, adding that both sides were in constant touch. Asked whether Bangladesh would clear the proposal, Singh said, ''If it is good economically, it will sell.'' The corporation had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding with the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation for setting up a liquid fuel-based 300 mw joint power plant at Hazira in Gujarat. The NTPC is also studying the possibility of setting up hydro projects. The upper reaches of Uttar Pradesh is a proposed venue. The corporation has short-listed three sites for wind power projects in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Commenting on whether the corporation would go in for disinvestment, Singh said the move has been put on hold. UNI
