'Suzuki can leave Maruti'

Industry Minister Murasoli Maran on Friday night asked Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan that it can opt out of Maruti Udyog Limited if the new managing director is not acceptable to it.

Reacting strongly to Suzuki moving the Delhi high court against the selection of R S S L N Bhaskarudu as managing director, the industry minister said there was no dearth of foreign partners to join the Maruti Udyog Limited.

''The Americans are there, Koreans are there. People are waiting to come here. So there is no dearth of technology.''

The industry minister did not wait to speculate on the future of Bhaskarudu, saying the matter is sub judice.

Maran admitted that there is a lack of trust between Suzuki and the Indian government, both equal partners in the Maruti Udyog, the country's largest carmaker.

Analysts say that Suzuki's threat to go in for international arbitration in London on the issue might have unnerved the government.
