Nifty rises marginallyPivotal prices improved further on the first day of the current settlement cycle, following buying support from financial institutions and general investors on the National Stock Exchange in Bombay on Wednesday. The NSE-50 Index (Nifty) opened at 1089.15 points, touched the day's high of 1108.15 points, low of 1089.15 points, before closing at 1100.85 points, showing a net gain of 12.20 points as against its previous close of 1088.65 points. The midcap index closed at 1245.10 points over Tuesday's close of 1231.65 points, gaining 13.45 points. The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 12.85 billion, involving 51.5 million shares. Business was led by ITC with a turnover of Rs 3.9 billion, Reliance Rs 1.9 billion, SBI-N Rs 1.3 billion, Castrol Rs 650.9 million, ICICI Bank Rs 504.4 million, TELCO Rs 445 million, Hind Lever Rs 365 million, Satyam Comp Rs 351 million, ACC Rs 294 million, TISCO Rs 269.6 million, Colgate Rs 240.9 million, BHEL Rs 197.7 million, Guj Amb Cem Rs 119.2, ICICI Rs 105.3 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 92.7 million, L&T Rs 76.1 million, Concor Rs 76 million, Infosys Tech Rs 67.6 million, Ponds Rs 64 million, Rel Capital Rs 46.6 million, MTNL Rs 37.6 million, Punjab Tractor Rs 29 million, BSES Rs 24.5 million and HDFC Rs 18.5 million. The top five gainers: ICICI by Rs 4.20 to Rs 89.05, Colgate rose by Rs 11.85 to Rs 296.65, Essar Steel by Rs 0.95 to Rs 25.25, Cochin Ref by Rs 5.00 to Rs 141.25, and TELCO hardened by Rs 9.95 to Rs 324.90. Losers Guj Amb Cem declined by Rs 4.90 to Rs 309.95, Mahindra and Mahindra came down by Rs 4.25 to Rs 397.00, ITC by Rs 4.70 to Rs 547.60, OBC by Re 0.50 to Rs 64.15 and Ind Rayon were decreased by Re 01.90 to Rs 256.30.
