Satyam Computer and GE Industrial Systems in JV

A new facility under the venture is expected to be the 'World Design Centre' for new products to be introduced by GE Industrial's Controls Division.

The venture is expected to co-ordinate design work with the GE unit's world-wide manufacturing facilities.

The President and CEO of GE India, Scott R Bayman, said the joint venture would provide design and development work in mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE and software for GE Industrial's product development in Europe and North America.

The 50:50 joint venture, to be called Satyam-GE Software Services Private Limited, is scheduled to be fully operational by January 1999. It will start with 35 people and expects to rope in over 100 professionals by the end of 1999.

"We are delighted to be partnering with Satyam, which clearly has demonstrated its world class capabilities and expertise in supplying software and engineering services to GE over the past four years. As a global company that does business in more than 100 countries, GE has been sourcing software and engineering services from India for its global operations for several years. This joint venture with Satyam is one more example of GE's commitment to India,'' Bayman said.

Calling the relationship with GE "a very privileged and rewarding one'', Satyam Chairman Ramalinga Raju, said: "The joint venture will further enhance the scope of our association and will reflect the strong commitment and capabilities of both partners.'' The new venture would not affect Satyam's existing engineering and software services business from other GE divisions and subsidiaries.

Satyam and GE are expected to share their expertise in the use of CAD/CAM/CAE tools for mechanical engineering design, embedded system software development and man-machine interface design and development.

The facility will have people with design engineering, tooling, software development and testing backgrounds.

Starting from concept design up to prototyping and testing, the processes will be designed to conform to SEI-CMM Level 4 or higher quality ratings.

Raju said Satyam, which had undergone a paradigm shift in the early Nineties by forging ties with the US ahead of other companies in the country, is now undergoing a new shift - it is exploring strategic links with major companies to provide specialised services.

Satyam is amongst the fastest growing IT solutions providers in the country with a customer base of around 100 multinational corporations spread over 22 countries.

GE Industrial Systems is a global leader in manufacturing products used to distribute, protect and control electrical power equipment and supplying product and service solutions for commercial and industrial applications.
