He said that the major hurdles in the way of Internet telephony are coverage, bandwidth and the quality of service.

Regulations vary in different countries and the Internet service providers are merging with telecom. The major quality issues are voice compression and echo cancellation, he said.

Weaver emphasized the need to adapting to the current international standards H.323. He said management of billing, settlement and monitoring are other important aspects in Internet telephony.

NeTrue, said Weaver, offer solutions toward the 'Internet phone gateway applications' and expects to have 50 nodes worldwide by the end of 1997.

Micro Giga Infotech Limited CEO K Pandyan said Internet telephony policy, and not technology, is the crux of the issue in India. The legal issues need to be sorted out, he said.
