TCS will license out multimedia technologyTata Consultancy Services, the country's largest software firm, plans to license out a set of new multimedia technologies it has developed in association with a US university.According to Lal C Singh, senior vice-president, TCS, the technologies, which have several potential applications in video broadcasting, will be licensed to both service providers and equipment manufacturers.
Singh said that TCS has applied for three patents to establish exclusive rights over the key technologies developed through the project. One of the technologies developed under the project would enable cable TV operators to insert additional information to their broadcast feeds, Singh said. For instance, someone watching a car race will be able to "point and click'' on a particular car to view additional details like the driver's racing record, the make of the car and other related information. This will help to bring together the best features of TV and the Internet. Another technology developed by Venkitarangan represents a breakthrough in the transmission of video over the World Wide Web, Singh said. "The key factors in all this is compression, which will help in minimising the bandwidth required for various multimedia applications,'' he added. - Compiled from the Indian media |
