Repeat show for Gandhi-Godse

Following persistent demand, Gandhi-Godse is returning to Anaheim for an August 1 performance at the William Cook Auditorium.

Vachikam, the national promoter for the controversial show, and TV Asia, the sponsor, expect many such repeat shows.

Apart from its curiosity value, the play is attracting attention because of its thought-provoking subject and Paresh Rawal's presence, says H R Shah of TV Asia. Bollywood actor Rawal plays Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

"He is able to draw audiences from across ethnic segments," Shah adds.

Rawal has spoken extensively why he was attracted to the play directed by Jaysukh Ravrani and written by Pradeep Dalvi. "I realised that people had not seen the darker side of Godse," he says, trying clearly to dispel any doubt that he is endorsing Godse's ideology. "When I read the play I was convinced that I wanted to play this man."

The play should never been banned, says Chandan Oza, one of its California organisers. People have a right to know why Godse turned against his one-time hero, he adds.
