Ready for the eMillennium?

There are just 93 days left before year 2000 rolls in, or, as Ravi Padaki of the Silicon Valley Indian Professionals says, "the eMillennium when eBusiness will dominate the economic landscape" gets going.

Padaki is one of the many volunteers working to put together SIPA's annual event, titled eBusiness Craze and Trends on October 23 at the Santa Clara Marriott.

According to many analysts, only the tip of the eBusiness iceberg has been seen yet. A recent report published by the investment firm of Goldman and Sachs says eBusiness will be booming in the next five years. The study reveals that the business will cross $ 1.5 trillion in the next couple of years.

"We want to capture the eBusiness phenomenon that is changing businesses and the way we conduct business both from B2B [business to business] and B2C [business to consumers] perspectives," says Padaki.

Punita Pandey, a SIPA volunteer, adds: "SIPA has been able to put together a dynamic panel of speakers who are industry leaders at the cutting edge of eBusiness, and venture capitalists helping usher in the eMillennium, if you will."

The panel of speakers include Dr Pehong Chen, president, chairman and CEO of Redwood City-based Broadvision Inc; Pavan Nigam, EVP, CTO and co-founder of Santa Clara-based Healtheon; and Jennifer Scott Fonstad, partner in Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the venture capital firm.

Recently Business Week listed Chen as one of the top 25 influential people on the eBusiness landscape. Broadvision's off-the-shelf software makes it very easy to change web sites into e-stores.

Nigam's company, Healtheon, is a pioneer in the Healthcare space. The company has designed and developed an Internet-based information and transaction platform that facilitates and streamlines interactions among the various participants in the healthcare industry.

Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the venture capital firm, is ranked as one of the top influential VC firms in the US, according to Bloomberg Personal Finance.

Sponsors for the event include UPS, OnSet Ventures, the law firm of Fenwick and West, the Chinese Software Professional Association and the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs.

For the past three months, a band of volunteers have been busy putting the entire show together. It is estimated that hundreds of people will attend the event.

"We have already received a fantastic response from many of our members," says Raman Dakshinamurthy, vice president of SIPA.
