7 soldiers killed in J&K militant attack

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Seven soldiers were killed and six others critically wounded in a fierce extremist attack on a security force transit camp at Sunerwani Bandipora, 60km north of Srinagar, late on Sunday night.

The heavily armed militants fired rockets and grenades on the camp in Baramulla district, following up with automatic weapons. Six soldiers were killed on the spot. Seven were wounded.

One of the injured soldiers died in hospital on Monday morning. The other men were flown to Srinagar for treatment.

This was the first attack on an army camp in Kashmir after the Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest underground militant organisation in the state, declared a unilateral ceasefire. The army in turn has suspended offensive operations against the Hizb. But operations against other groups are continuing.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the latest attack.

Meanwhile, in the state's summer capital Srinagar, militants attacked a police station with a hand-grenade in Khanyar in the old city, injuring two paramilitary personnel and three civilians.

Two policemen were critically wounded when militants opened fire on a patrol at Maharaj Bazaar in uptown Srinagar. The militants escaped.
